About this calculator
Australia's income tax system is comparatively simple: one federal system, no state income tax, a generous tax-free threshold of $18,200, and a 2% Medicare levy that funds the public health system. Superannuation is paid by your employer on top of your salary rather than deducted from it.
This calculator applies the 2025-26 resident tax rates — 16% above the tax-free threshold, 30% above $45,000, 37% above $135,000 and 45% above $190,000 — and adds the Medicare levy to produce your net take-home figure.
Because super is an employer contribution, the salary you enter should be your base salary excluding superannuation unless your contract is quoted as a total package.
How the Australia calculation works
The first $18,200 of income is tax free for Australian residents. Above that, marginal rates apply to each slice of income in turn, so no raise ever leaves you worse off. Non-residents do not receive the tax-free threshold and are taxed from the first dollar.
The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income for most earners, with reductions and exemptions for low-income taxpayers. Higher earners without private hospital cover may also pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge, which is not included here.
- Tax-free threshold of $18,200 for residents.
- Marginal rates of 16%, 30%, 37% and 45%.
- Medicare levy of 2% on taxable income.
- Superannuation guarantee is paid by your employer on top of salary.
