About this calculator

New York State runs a progressive income tax with nine brackets, starting at 4% and reaching 10.9% on the very highest incomes. For most salaried workers the effective state rate lands between 5.5% and 6.85%, on top of federal income tax and payroll taxes.

This page pre-selects New York in the state dropdown so you can see the combined federal and state picture immediately. The federal calculation is identical to the national US calculator: standard deduction, marginal brackets, Social Security to the wage base, and uncapped Medicare.

If you live in New York City, remember that the city levies its own separate income tax of roughly 3.078% to 3.876%. That city tax is not included below and should be subtracted separately.

How New York tax is calculated

New York applies its standard deduction first, then works through its bracket table. The 5.5% and 6% bands cover most middle-income salaries, while the 6.85% band begins above roughly $215,000 of taxable income.

Residency matters more in New York than in most states. New York City residents pay city income tax on top of state tax, while Yonkers levies a surcharge. Commuters living outside the city but working inside it generally avoid the city tax on wages.

  • New York State standard deduction applied before brackets.
  • Progressive state brackets from 4% to 10.9%.
  • Federal brackets, Social Security and Medicare calculated alongside.
  • New York City resident income tax (about 3.1%–3.9%) is not included.
  • Yonkers resident surcharge is not included.
  • New York State Paid Family Leave deduction is excluded.
