About this calculator

California has the most progressive state income tax in the United States, running from 1% on the first slice of income up to 12.3% on the highest earners, plus a 1% mental health services surcharge above $1 million. Combined with federal tax and FICA, a Californian earning a six-figure salary can face a total effective deduction rate above 35%.

This page pre-selects California in the state dropdown and layers its bracket table on top of the federal calculation. It also adds State Disability Insurance at 1.2% of wages, which since the removal of the wage cap applies to every dollar you earn.

The federal side of the calculation is identical to the national US calculator: standard deduction, marginal federal brackets, Social Security up to the wage base, and uncapped Medicare.

How California tax is calculated

California taxes income after its own standard deduction, which is much smaller than the federal one. The state's nine brackets rise steeply through the middle-income range, which is why an income around $70,000 already crosses into the 9.3% marginal band.

State Disability Insurance is technically an insurance premium rather than a tax, but it comes out of the same paycheck. At 1.2% with no wage ceiling, it is a meaningful cost for high earners and is shown as its own line item.

  • California standard deduction applied before state brackets.
  • Nine progressive state brackets from 1% to 12.3%.
  • State Disability Insurance at 1.2% of wages, no cap.
  • Federal brackets, Social Security and Medicare calculated alongside.
  • No local city income tax in California, unlike New York City.
  • Mental Health Services Tax of 1% above $1 million is not modelled.
