About this calculator
Ontario employees pay federal income tax, Ontario provincial income tax, Canada Pension Plan contributions and Employment Insurance premiums. Provincial rates run from 5.05% on the first bracket up to 13.16% on income above $220,000.
This page pre-selects Ontario so you can see the full combined picture immediately. Both federal and provincial calculations apply their own basic personal amount credits, which is why low and moderate incomes pay far less than the headline rates suggest.
Ontario also charges a surtax on higher provincial tax amounts and a health premium collected through the tax system. Neither is included below, so higher earners should treat the estimate as a floor rather than a ceiling.
How Ontario tax is calculated
Federal tax is calculated first using the national bracket table and the federal basic personal amount. Ontario then applies its own five brackets to the same income, reduced by the provincial basic personal amount credit.
CPP contributions apply to earnings between $3,500 and the annual ceiling, with the CPP2 tier covering a band above that. EI premiums stop once you reach maximum insurable earnings, so both contributions are capped no matter how much you earn.
- Ontario brackets: 5.05%, 9.15%, 11.16%, 12.16% and 13.16%.
- Federal brackets from 15% to 33% calculated alongside.
- Basic personal amount credits applied federally and provincially.
- CPP at 5.95% plus CPP2 at 4% on the upper earnings band.
- EI premiums at 1.64% up to maximum insurable earnings.
- Ontario surtax and Ontario Health Premium are excluded from the estimate.
